The Microsoft Education LTI brings together Microsoft 365 tools for teaching, learning, collaboration, and communication directly within Canvas. The Microsoft Education LTI provides a unified experience for Microsoft OneDrive, Teams Meetings, OneNote Class Notebook, Assignments, and other Microsoft 365 education services, allowing instructors and students to work seamlessly across both platforms. Rutgers Canvas does not include Microsoft Teams or Microsoft Teams Sync.
To use this integration, users must sign in with their Rutgers Microsoft account:
- Instructors must sign in with their Rutgers Connect account.
- Students must sign in with their ScarletMail account.
To ensure a successful connection between Canvas and Microsoft 365 services, your Canvas user profile must include your Microsoft 365 email address. See How do I add an additional email address as a contact method in Canvas?
The Canvas and Microsoft Education integration provides several key teaching and learning capabilities:
- Microsoft 365 Content Integration: Instructors and students can access and share Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, image, and other OneDrive-hosted files directly within Canvas. Content can be embedded or linked throughout a course, including Syllabus, Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Announcements, and Modules.
- Teams Meetings in Canvas: Schedule, manage, and join Microsoft Teams meetings directly from within Canvas. Users can view upcoming and past meetings, access recordings, and participate in course-related virtual sessions without leaving the LMS.
- OneNote Class Notebook: The Class Notebook application enables instructors to create a digital notebook structure that includes student notebooks for individual work and feedback, a content library for distributing course materials, and a collaboration space for shared student activities and group work.
- Assignment Templates and Submissions: Course instructors can create assignment templates that automatically distribute a copy to each student. Students may submit assignments directly from their OneDrive.
- Canvas Collaborations: Instructors and students can use Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in Canvas Collaborations.
- Course Navigation Access: The Microsoft Education dashboard can be added to the Canvas course navigation menu, providing a centralized location where instructors and students can access available Microsoft apps and services for the course.
To get started, course instructors should manage their course navigation links and complete the Microsoft Education LTI set-up.
