Working Groups

The Steering Committee has identified several areas of need and established the following working groups to address these issues:

Learning Management Systems at the University are currently utilized for a wide spectrum of uses including committee work, project management, file storage, community groups for faculty, staff, and students, research sites, and more. The guidelines working group will look to establish a ruleset for what type of content and courses belong on Canvas and what does not.

Decisions will be based around instruction vs non-instruction, targeted user group (students, faculty, staff), and use case. Recommendations will be delivered to the steering committee for discussion and/or action.

Group Members:
  • Filiz Carus Ozen, RBHS-SHP
  • Roy Chao, OIT
  • Charlie Collick, OIT
  • Priscilla Hockin Brown, OIT
  • David Goldman, SAS
  • Joy McDonald, Newark
  • Will Pagan, TLT
  • Ron Ransome, Physics Dept
  • Courtney Stanzione, SAS
  • Sharon Stoerger, SCI
  • Christopher Valera, OIT
  • Alexandra Walczak, Biological Sciences

Meeting Notes:

There are several ways course shells can be created in the current multiple LMS environment including, user-generated, help desk requested, or generated via integration with the schedule of classes/registration system.

This working group will evaluate the pros and cons of each method, the administrative requirements, unit controls, and service level requirements.

Meeting Notes:

With a large percentage of the University’s instructors utilizing Canvas for the first time, this working group will foster collaboration between instructional designers, learning technologists, faculty, and students to develop resources for implementing technology throughout the learning process.

Legacy LMS/Canvas comparison charts, course development discussion, design approaches, and migration lessons are some of the anticipated deliverables from this working group.

Group Members:
  • Veronica Armour, SCI
  • Carly Finkel, Camden
  • Erica Lucci, SCI
  • Will Pagan, TLT

With an estimated 25,000 non-instructional project sites currently on Sakai and several thousand additional sites spread across Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle, this working group will evaluate the various use cases, identify possible solutions, and develop migration plans for each.

This working group will collaborate with the Guidelines group to develop a cohesive approach to providing solutions for all current and potential LMS project site use cases.

Group Members:
  • Anne Carr-Schmid, Biological Sciences
  • Roy Chao, OIT
  • David Edward, OIT
  • Vladimir Gabrielescu, OIT
  • Barbara Gladson, RBHS-SHP

Group Members:
  • Edward Bedikian, DoCS
  • Charlie Collick, OIT
  • David Edward, Newark
  • Joy McDonald, Newark
  • Elizabeth McMillion, OIT
  • Warren Nevins, DoCS (Chair)

  • David Schober, DoCS
  • Chris Valera, OIT
  • Ana Verma, OIT

Each legacy system requires a data retention plan that aligns with University policy (5 years) and to address unit specific needs such as contested grades, accreditation, and instructor evaluations. In addition, content from courses that are not migrated to Canvas, but are requested to be archived by units or instructors will need to be stored off the LMS.

This working group will gather requirements around data retention and content archiving, work with vendors, and develop plans to present to the steering committee.
