Rutgers.eduAs part of Rutgers’ ongoing efforts to streamline and standardize academic technology services, Rutgers Canvas and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will uninstall BigBlueButton from Canvas on December 23, 2026. This change follows previous updates to BigBlueButton services, including the discontinuation of the university’s premium recording retention service announced in July 2026.
Beginning December 23, 2026, instructors and students will no longer be able to create, launch, or access BigBlueButton meetings through Canvas. Any existing BigBlueButton links in Canvas courses will stop working after the integration is removed.
Instructors who require web conferencing and virtual classroom capabilities are encouraged to use one of the university-supported alternatives:
- Zoom
- Cisco Webex
- Microsoft Teams through the Microsoft Education LTI
These platforms can be used for live class sessions, virtual office hours, and other synchronous learning activities.
Important: Instructors should review their Winter and Spring 2027 courses before December 23, 2026, and remove or replace any BigBlueButton links and references. This change affects only the BigBlueButton integration in Canvas. Canvas courses, content, assignments, and other third-party integrations will continue to operate normally.
