BigBlueButton Recording Storage Changes Effective August 31, 2026

As part of the Rutgers Academic Technology Advisory Council’s ongoing efforts to promote the effective and sustainable use of academic technology resources, Rutgers Canvas and the Office of Information Technology will not renew the university’s premium BigBlueButton hosting and recording-retention service.  BigBlueButton, formerly known in Canvas as Canvas Conferences, will remain available for conducting online meetings. However, beginning September 1, 2026, meeting recordings will be retained in Canvas for a maximum of two weeks.

Instructors may also use the Zoom integration in Canvas to conduct live class sessions, hold virtual office hours, or support student group meetings. Zoom recordings are retained for 180 days, giving instructors additional time to manage and preserve recordings needed for future use.  Information about using Zoom in Canvas, including setup instructions and documentation, is available on the Rutgers Canvas Zoom page.

Instructors who need to preserve a BigBlueButton or Zoom recording beyond its retention period should download the recording and upload it to Rutgers Kaltura.

Rutgers OIT is also working with Blindside Networks, the university’s BigBlueButton hosting provider, to migrate eligible recordings from past meetings to Kaltura. Additional information about the migration process and any actions required from instructors will be shared as it becomes available.  This change will not otherwise affect Rutgers Canvas or the ability to use BigBlueButton for live online meetings.

Thank you for your understanding as Rutgers continues to standardize and improve the academic technology services available through Canvas.
