Rutgers.eduRutgers Canvas is pleased to announce the availability of the Microsoft Education LTI, Microsoft’s latest integration for Canvas, which provides unified access to OneDrive files, Microsoft 365 documents, and collaboration tools directly within Canvas. The Microsoft Education LTI replaces the legacy Microsoft Office 365 LTI 1.1 integration and aligns with Microsoft’s current support and development roadmap.
Microsoft Education LTI enables instructors and students to:
- Embed Microsoft files directly into Canvas content.
- Create and share files from OneDrive within Canvas.
- Use Microsoft documents as assignment templates.
- Maintain file ownership and storage within their Microsoft 365 accounts.
Important Information About the Legacy Office 365 LTI 1.1 Integration
As part of this transition, the ability to add new content using the Office 365 LTI 1.1 (Instructure legacy app) has been disabled.
What this Means for Canvas Users
Existing Office 365 LTI 1.1 links will continue to function until September 17, 2026, when Microsoft disables the legacy integration.
After September 17, 2026:
- Existing Office 365 LTI 1.1 links in Canvas will no longer work.
- Files stored in OneDrive will not be deleted.
- Users will continue to have access to their files through OneDrive and Microsoft 365.
- Any Canvas content that relies on legacy Office 365 LTI 1.1 links will need to be recreated using Microsoft Education LTI.
No Automatic Migration Available
There is currently no direct migration or content-copy path from Office 365 LTI 1.1 links to Microsoft Education LTI links.
This limitation affects content created using the legacy integration, including:
- Microsoft files embedded in the Rich Content Editor.
- External Tool assignment templates configured for student submissions.
- Canvas Collaborations created by students and instructors using the Office 365 LTI 1.1 integration.
- Course content (Canvas Pages, Assignments, Syllabus, Quizzes, Announcements, and Discussions) copied from previous courses that contain legacy Office 365 LTI links.
Because legacy links cannot be automatically converted, instructors should review their Canvas courses and identify any Microsoft content that needs to be recreated using the Microsoft Education LTI before September 17, 2026. Instructors will need to ask students to recreate their Canvas Collaborations.
The sunset of Microsoft Office 365 does not affect Canvas Collaborations created with Google Drive LTI (1.3).
