Canvas Role: Accessibility Assistant

Rutgers Canvas and Rutgers Access and Disability Resources (RADR) are pleased to announce the availability of a new course role for Rutgers Canvas, which clearly defines the purpose of the course participant. The Accessibility Assistant role is based on the designer role in Canvas and will have access to published and unpublished course content to monitor the course content of students with documented needs.  This role will not have access to student grades.

When an Accessibility Assistant is enrolled in a course site, the user will have permission to:

  • Announcements – view
  • Conversations – send messages to individual course members
  • Course Calendar – add / edit / delete
  • Discussions – view
  • Groups – view all student groups
  • Manage Assignments and Quizzes – edit only
  • Manage Course Content – edit only
  • Manage Course Files – edit only
  • Manage Pages – update only
  • Question banks – view and link
  • Users – view list
  • Users – view primary email address

While this is an editing role, the purpose of this role is to mitigate course accessibility needs before the content is published to students. When the Rutgers Canvas Help Desk receives a request from RADR, Accessibility Assistants will be enrolled in the designated course, and the course instructors will be notified. See Canvas Course Role Permissions Comparison Chart for more information on all Rutgers Canvas course roles.
