Setting Grading Schemes in Canvas

Using Grading Schemes in Canvas

A grading scheme is a set of criteria that measures varying levels of achievement in a course. Without a grading scheme, scores are not measured against any specific standard. It is important that you enable and accurately implement a grading scheme in your Canvas course that matches the information you provide in your course syllabus.

Important information about Grade Schemes:

Grade schemes are required to submit final grades from Canvas to REGIS. Rutgers REGIS GradeSync tool will allow assigned graders to submit the course letter grade in Canvas to the Rutgers student information systems. See Rutgers REGIS GradeSync.

Grading schemes vary by department or school. Review your grading scheme carefully and ensure that it aligns with school or departmental policy. (Most Legacy Rutgers departments and schools will not accept B- or C- grades.)

Copying content will copy over the grade scheme. When using the import content tool feature, a customized grading schemes will be brought over to the new course site.

    buttons for grading schemes

    • Name your grading scheme [1] and configure the percentage ranges so that they match what you have in your syllabus.
    • If you need to add additional rows or remove rows, click the + or x icons [2].
    • Additional Considerations
      • If you intend to use the REGIS GradeSyncTool to transfer final grades from Canvas to REGIS for final grade submission, then an incorrect grading scheme will mean that your final grades will be inaccurate.
      • If you would like to round up (e.g., 89.5 becomes an A), you can use decimals in your grading scheme.
      • Temporary and nonstandard grades must appear in the Canvas grading scheme to be assigned in the gradebook as an override grade. This includes grades such as H, NC, PA, S, TB, TB+, TC, TC+, TD, TF, TNC, TT, TZ, and U. Alternatively, you may submit the temporary grades directly to REGIS before using Rutgers REGIS GradeSync.
  5. In the pop-up window from Step 3, click Select Another Scheme. Locate the grading scheme you just created in the navigation pane on the left. Click on your grading scheme, and then select the Use this grading standard button in the pane on the right.
