Overview

The WileyPLUS / Canvas Integration delivers single sign-on access to WileyPLUS, seamlessly incorporating WileyPLUS content and features with your Canvas course.  The integration can optionally support grade synchronization to Canvas at either the assignment level, or as a cumulative score for all WileyPLUS assignments.

Access to WileyPLUS is provided by external tool links that you add to your Canvas course.

All WileyPLUS links are added to Canvas in either the Assignments or Modules area.  The critical difference between these two areas is that the links that support grade synchronization will be added to the Assignments area; WileyPLUS external tool links added to the Modules area do not support grade synchronization.

Adding WileyPLUS Content

Modules

Modules allow you to organize your course content into smaller sections or units.  A Canvas module can contain any WileyPLUS link you wish to add to your course; however, individual WileyPLUS assignment links that are added to a module will not support grade synchronization.[1]

  1. Within your Canvas course, select Modules from the left navigation menu.
a navigation tool bar with modules highlighted
  2. If no modules exist, or to create a new module, click the Create a Module button.
'view progress' and 'create a module' buttons with Create a module highlighted
  3. Provide a name for the module (e.g. WileyPLUS) and click the Add Module button.adding module with the title input highlighted and an arrow pointing to add module
  4. The new module will be listed within the Modules area.  If this module should be visible to students, be sure to click the gray circle icon to publish it to students.  The icon will change to a green circle.

  5. To add a new item to a module, click the + button to the far right of the module name.

  6. Begin by selecting External Tool from the Add drop-down menu.  A list of external tools that have been added to Canvas is displayed; locate and select WileyPLUS.
add item to wileyplus screen with add and Wileyplus highlighted
If this is the first WileyPLUS link that you are adding to your course, there are two setup sequences that will be presented only once. The first is to identify the WileyPLUS product you will be using, and the second specifies the integration experience you want to have.
If you are adding subsequent links to WileyPLUS content to a Canvas module and these one-time configuration steps are complete, skip to page 10.

Pairing your Canvas Course to a WileyPLUS Product

As you add your first WileyPLUS content link, you will be prompted to enter the Product ID for the WileyPLUS product you wish to use.  You may have already received this information from your Wiley sales representative; if not, please contact your Wiley representative to request the Product ID for the Wiley title you want to use with Canvas.

  7. Using uppercase letters, enter the Product ID you received and click the Submit button.
prompt to enter wileyplus product id with get started highlighted
  8. A verification screen will appear reflecting the Product ID that was entered.  If the product listed is correct, click the Go to WileyPLUS button[2].  If the product shown is not correct, please verify your Product ID, re-enter, and submit it; otherwise, contact your Wiley representative to obtain the correct WileyPLUS Product ID.

    Choosing your Integration Experience

  9.  After you have successfully paired your Canvas Course to the WileyPLUS product you will next select the integration experience you wish to have with WileyPLUS.  There are essentially two different approaches:  Deep Integration or Basic Integration. Deep Integration offers greater flexibility in course design and flow, allowing you to link to discrete areas of WileyPLUS; specific chapters within the online textbook; and individual WileyPLUS assignments, precisely where you would like them to appear within Canvas.  A deep integration also supports grade synchronization at the assignment level. Basic Integration provides a single link to access the WileyPLUS Homepage for the course, and from there, students navigate within WileyPLUS to access the content they need.  With a basic integration, you may optionally synchronize a cumulative score for all WileyPLUS assignments.
The following are a few typical configuration choices and how you would set them up.  Select the integration experience that works best for you.

Assignments

Depending upon the integration experience you have selected, a Canvas assignment can be created and linked to the WileyPLUS Homepage for synchronizing a cumulative score for all WileyPLUS assignments; or, multiple Canvas assignments can be created, each linked to an individual WileyPLUS assignment with grade synchronization for each assignment.

  1. Within your Canvas course, select Assignments from the left navigation menu.
    navigation bar with Assignments highlighted
  2. Canvas Assignments will contain at least one Assignment Group called Assignments.  Use the +Group button to create a new assignment group, if desired; otherwise, to create a new Canvas assignment click the +Assignment button.

  8. Hover over the tile for the WileyPLUS assignment that you want to associate with the Canvas assignment you are creating.  Make a mental note of the following assignment details:
    • Assignment name (Description)
    • Assignment due date, if applicable (End Date & End Time)
    • Assignment point value (Max Points)

These details are not passed back to Canvas, and while these values are not required to match what is in WileyPLUS, there may be less confusion if there is parity between the WileyPLUS and Canvas assignments.

If you have selected the Basic Integration experience, you can create a Canvas assignment that is linked to the WileyPLUS Homepage.  This will have the effect of creating a column under Canvas Grades to which each student’s cumulative WileyPLUS score will be synchronized.   The process for creating the Canvas assignment is very similar, except that the points will be the total of all of your WileyPLUS assignments, and there will be no due date.

Final Checklist

After you have completed adding the WileyPLUS content that you will be using in your course, take a moment to review:

  • For the integration experience selected, all of the appropriate links have been placed under Canvas Assignments and/or Canvas Modules.
  • If deep-linking to individual WileyPLUS Assignments under Canvas Assignments, students do not have access to the WileyPLUS Assignments link under Modules.
  • All modules, WileyPLUS links, and Canvas Assignments which should be accessible to students have been published by checking the gray circle to the right of each link entry.
  • All modules or WileyPLUS links which are for instructors only have not been published to students.

A final step is to make sure that the course itself has been published and is accessible to students enrolled in the course.  Go to the home page for your course, and look in the upper right corner of the screen, under Course Status.  If you see a red Unpublished button, click the Publish button.

Appendix B – Adding Canvas Assignment Shortcuts to a Module

For Grade Synchronization to work, one or more Canvas assignments must be created and associated to either the WileyPLUS Homepage, to synchronize a cumulative WileyPLUS score, or to individual WileyPLUS assignments, to synchronize the score for each assignment.  However, if you would prefer that students not have to go back and forth between the Canvas Assignments and Modules areas, it is possible to add a shortcut to Canvas assignments within a module, while still preserving the grade synchronization capabilities.

  1. To add a new item to a module, click the + button to the far right of the module name.
plus button to add a module highlighted
  2. On the Add Item screen, choose Assignment for the Add dropdown and click the name of the Canvas assignment for which a shortcut is to be created in the module.  Click the Add Item button.
dropdown menu with available assignments to add

[1] In the Assignments section of this document, we will look at creating a Canvas assignment that links to an individual WileyPLUS assignment, which is necessary for grade synchronization.  If you prefer to access all of the WileyPLUS content from within a module, you may add shortcuts to your Canvas assignments.
[2] Product pairing and integration experience selection occurs only once and cannot be reset through the user interface.  If you make an error or change your mind, please call WileyPLUS Instructor Support at (877) 586-0192 and ask that your Canvas course be unpaired, so that these selections are reset.
[3] Product pairing and integration experience selection occurs only once and cannot be reset through the user interface.  If you make an error or change your mind, please call WileyPLUS Instructor Support at (877) 586-0192 and ask that your Canvas course be unpaired, so that these selections are reset.
[4] Do not publish these links in Canvas, making them accessible by students.  The student role will prevent unauthorized instructor access to these destinations, but if a student were able to access WileyPLUS Assignments to complete their assignments, instead of using the Canvas assignments that are linked to WileyPLUS, their WileyPLUS scores will not synchronize to Canvas.
