Screencastify error for Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor


You may receive an error when opening Respondus Lockdown Browser saying that you need to remove Screencastify from your Google Chrome browser. Screencastify is a screen video recorder and editor that is available as a Google Chrome extension.

Removing Screencastify from Google Chrome

To remove Screencastify, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Press the three dots on the upper right of the browser.
  3. Go to More Tools > Extensions.
  4. Scroll down and find Screencastify.
  5. Click Remove under Screencastify.

Once Screencastify is removed, close Google Chrome and open Respondus Lockdown Browser to see if you can access the Rutgers Canvas homepage. If so, you should be able to access your Canvas Quiz accordingly.

Other Troubleshooting Options

If removing Screencastify from your list of extensions does not work and opening Respondus Lockdown Browser still asks for you to remove Screencastify, it is possible that another profile within your Google Chrome browser also has Screencastify within it.

Please switch to any other profile associated with the Chrome browser. See Switching profiles within Google Chrome.

If you are unable to access these profiles (family member, colleague, friend, etc.), please fully remove the profile to remove Screencastify from your Chrome browser. See Removing a profile within Google Chrome.

Once Screencastify is removed from all profiles or all other profiles have been deleted, please open Respondus LockDown Browser.

If you continue to receive the same error, complete the following actions below:

  1. Remove any user data that is located with Chrome by following this file path:
    • PC: C:\Users\userid\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
    • MAC: Users//Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default
  2. Uninstall Google Chrome, then re-install Chrome.

If you are unable to remove the extension or remove it completely from your Google Chrome, you will need to use another computer to take your exam or quiz that requires Lockdown Browser. You can also reach out to the Canvas Help Desk for further assistance as well.
